Background of the Study
Political alliances play a critical role in shaping the dynamics of local governance, often serving as stabilizing forces in politically diverse environments. In Badagry Local Government Area of Lagos State, alliances between different political groups have influenced administrative decisions and contributed to local stability. Such alliances are built on mutual interests and the need to navigate complex political landscapes where competing interests coexist (Ade, 2023). Recent research underscores that while these alliances can foster cooperation and policy continuity, they may also lead to compromises that undermine accountability and transparency (Okafor, 2024). The interplay between coalition politics and local administrative practices is particularly significant in urban settings like Badagry, where diverse communities seek balanced representation. This study critically examines the role of political alliances in maintaining local government stability, analyzing both the cooperative benefits and potential pitfalls inherent in such arrangements. By integrating empirical data with theoretical insights, the research aims to contribute to policy debates on enhancing governance and ensuring sustained political stability (Chukwu, 2025). Statement of the Problem
Despite the perceived stabilizing influence of political alliances in Badagry, challenges remain in balancing coalition interests with transparent governance. Conflicts of interest, patronage, and the dilution of accountability often accompany these alliances, potentially undermining local government stability. The gap between coalition rhetoric and practical policy implementation creates issues in meeting community needs and ensuring equitable representation. This study seeks to explore these discrepancies and assess whether political alliances truly contribute to stable and effective local governance (Ade, 2023; Okafor, 2024).
